Tonsillectomy in Children - A Complete Guide for Parents
If your pediatrician has recommended tonsil removal (tonsillectomy), you may feel uncertain and worried. This is natural - your child's surgery is a serious matter. At MediKlinik, we understand your concerns and want to provide you with all the necessary information and professional care.
Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in children and can significantly improve your child's sleep quality and health. Our experienced ENT specialists have extensive experience with tonsil surgery in children of all age groups.
When is Tonsillectomy Appropriate?
Tonsils are part of the immune system and play an important role in protection. However, sometimes they become a source of problems and need to be removed. The most common reasons are:
- Chronic Infections: Recurring tonsil infections multiple times a year (7 or more episodes per year)
- Obstruction: Enlarged tonsils blocking breathing and sleep, leading to apnea
- Feeding Problems: Large tonsils making swallowing difficult
- Sleep Issues: Severe snoring and sleep apnea caused by enlarged tonsils
- Recurring Infections: Infections that return with repeating frequency
How Tonsillectomy Works at MediKlinik
Preparation: Before surgery, the child undergoes a complete medical examination. Blood tests and all necessary cardiovascular health tests are performed.
Day of Surgery: The child will be without food and drinks for a specific time before surgery (you will be told exactly when). Upon arrival at the clinic, they will be prepared for surgery and put under general anesthesia.
The Surgery Itself: The operation usually takes 20-30 minutes. The surgeon removes the tonsils using modern surgical techniques with minimal bleeding. Return home is possible the same day.
Post-operative Care: The child will be supervised in the recovery room until fully recovered from anesthesia. Our healthcare staff will monitor their vital functions.

Book NowRecovery After Tonsillectomy
The first week after surgery is critical. Follow these tips:
- Rest: The child should avoid physical activity and rough play
- Pain: Pain is normal - give the child pain medication according to doctor's instructions
- Bloody Saliva: Mild bloody saliva is normal in the first two hours, but contact the doctor if there is more bleeding
- Drinking and Eating: Serve soft, cold drinks and food (ice cream, yogurt, vanilla pudding)
- Isolation: Isolate the child from other children and people to prevent infections
Possible Complications and When to Contact the Doctor
Although tonsillectomy is a safe procedure, there are certain complications you should watch for:
- Noticeable bleeding from the throat (more than just drops)
- High fever (above 39C)
- Serious swallowing problems or complete inability to eat and drink
- Abnormal smell from the mouth or white coating at the surgery site
Most children recover from tonsillectomy quickly and without complications. After a week, the child usually feels more comfortable, and after four weeks, they are fully healed.
