What is vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens are interrupted. The aim is to prevent sperm from being present in the ejaculate. It is considered a permanent form of male contraception and is suitable mainly for men or couples who no longer plan another pregnancy.
The procedure does not change testosterone production, erection or sexual sensation. It is important to know that the effect is not immediate. Another form of contraception must be used until follow-up testing confirms the desired result.
Who may consider it
- Men who have completed family planning: the decision should be stable and carefully considered.
- Couples looking for a non-hormonal long-term solution: vasectomy may be discussed as part of shared decision-making.
- Patients who want a controlled process: consultation and follow-up semen analysis are an important part of care.
Vasectomy should not be seen as a temporary solution. Reversal procedures exist, but fertility restoration is not guaranteed.
Consultation and recovery
During consultation, the urologist explains the principle of the procedure, possible risks, expected recovery and the need for follow-up. The doctor also reviews your medical history, medication, allergies and previous procedures in the groin or scrotal area.
After the procedure, mild discomfort, tenderness, swelling or bruising can occur. Physical activity and sport should be resumed according to the doctor’s recommendation.
