About the Procedure

Pregnancy termination (abortion) is a medical procedure that ends a pregnancy. In Slovakia, it is performed in accordance with Act No. 73/1986 Coll. on artificial termination of pregnancy.

We provide comprehensive care with complete confidentiality, an empathetic approach, and psychological support before, during, and after the procedure.

Legal requirements in Slovakia:

  • Up to 12 weeks of pregnancy - upon woman's request
  • After 12 weeks - only for medical reasons (health risk for mother, serious fetal abnormality)
  • Woman's consent - written informed consent
  • Waiting period - minimum 48 hours from first consultation
  • Minors - parental or guardian consent required

Termination Method

Surgical Abortion (up to 12 weeks)

A surgical procedure using vacuum aspiration (suction) performed under general or local anesthesia.

  • Most common method in Slovakia
  • Performed under general anesthesia
  • Duration: 5-10 minutes
  • Same-day discharge (after 2-4 hours)
  • Nearly 100% success rate
  • Less bleeding than medical abortion

What to Expect After the Procedure

First Days:

  • Bleeding - similar to menstruation, lasts 5-14 days

  • Hygiene - pads only (no tampons), shower instead of bath

First Weeks:

  • Swimming, sauna, bathtub - avoid for 2-3 weeks

  • Important to start contraception immediately (hormonal on the day of procedure)
  • If planning another pregnancy, wait 3-6 months

When to Contact a Doctor:

  • Heavy bleeding (soaking a pad within 1 hour)
  • Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
  • Severe pain not responding to painkillers
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Persistent pregnancy symptoms after one week

Psychological Support

The decision to terminate a pregnancy is emotionally challenging for many women. We provide comprehensive psychological support:

  • Before the procedure - help with decision-making, explanation of the process
  • During your stay - empathetic and confidential approach from staff
  • After the procedure - psychological counseling if needed
  • Long-term support - contact us even after the procedure

Women's reactions to abortion vary - some feel relief, others sadness, guilt, or mixed emotions. All these reactions are normal. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to seek professional help.

Possible Risks and Complications

First trimester abortion (up to 12 weeks) is a safe procedure with low complication risk:

  • Incomplete evacuation of uterus (1-2%, requires repeat procedure)
  • Infection (less than 1%)
  • Heavy bleeding (less than 1%)
  • Uterine perforation (very rare, 0.1%)
  • Anesthesia reaction (rare)

No negative impact on fertility:

A professionally performed abortion does not affect future fertility or the course of future pregnancies. Women can have normal, healthy children after an abortion.

Contraception After Abortion

It's important to start contraception immediately after the procedure because fertility returns almost immediately. During your follow-up appointment, we'll help you choose a suitable method:

  • Hormonal contraception - pills, patch, ring (start immediately)
  • Intrauterine device (IUD/IUS) - can be inserted right after procedure
  • Injection - long-term protection
  • Barrier methods - condoms
  • Long-term solution - sterilization (for women who have completed their family)
