What is Cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens that gradually impairs vision. It is the most common cause of vision deterioration in people over 60 years old. The lens, which is normally transparent, becomes cloudy and light doesn't pass through it as well as before.

Symptoms of cataract:

  • Blurred, cloudy vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare
  • Worse night vision
  • Need for more frequent glasses changes
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Fading of colors

How Does Cataract Surgery Work?

1

Local Anesthesia

The eye is numbed with drops, the procedure is painless. General anesthesia is not required.

2

Micro-incision

A small incision (2-3mm) is made to access the lens. Stitches are not required.

3

Phacoemulsification

The clouded lens is broken up by ultrasound and aspirated. The lens capsule remains preserved.

4

Lens Implantation

A foldable artificial lens is inserted into the capsule, which unfolds and assumes the correct position.

Questions About Cataract Surgery

Is the surgery painful?

No, the surgery is painless. The eye is numbed with drops and during the procedure you may only feel slight pressure. After surgery, the eye may be slightly sensitive, but severe pain is not common.

When will I see better?

Most patients notice significant improvement in vision within 24-48 hours after surgery. Complete stabilization of vision may take several weeks.

Will I need glasses?

It depends on the type of implanted lens. Standard monofocal lenses require reading glasses. Premium multifocal lenses can significantly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses.

How long is the recovery?

Most normal activities are possible within a few days. However, we recommend avoiding strenuous activities, swimming and makeup for approximately 2 weeks. Complete healing takes 4-6 weeks.

Can cataract come back?

The cataract itself cannot return after surgery because the natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. In some cases, the capsule behind the lens may become cloudy (secondary cataract), which is easily treated with a laser procedure.
