Vasectomy - Male Sterilization

A simple, safe, and effective permanent male contraception procedure performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a simple surgical procedure in which the vas deferens (sperm ducts) are cut, preventing sperm from entering the ejaculate. It is one of the most reliable methods of contraception with nearly 100% effectiveness.

A vasectomy DOES NOT affect sexual function, erection, libido, or the amount of ejaculate. The only change is the absence of sperm in the semen.

Who is a Vasectomy Suitable For?

  • Men who have completed their family planning
  • Couples who do not want (more) children
  • Men looking for a permanent contraception solution
  • Alternative to female contraceptive methods
  • Usually men over 30 years old with children

Vasectomy Procedure

A vasectomy is an outpatient procedure lasting 15-20 minutes performed under local anesthesia. You can go home after the procedure.

1

Preparation

Shave the scrotal area the day before the procedure. Come to the clinic on the day of the procedure; fasting is not required.

2

Local Anesthesia

Application of local anesthetic to the scrotal area. The procedure is painless; you may only feel a slight pulling sensation.

3

Procedure

The urologist makes 1-2 small incisions in the scrotal area (5-10 mm). He locates the vas deferens, cuts them, and ties off the ends. Duration: 15-20 minutes.

4

Closure

The small incisions are sutured with absorbable stitches or left without stitches (they heal spontaneously). A sterile dressing is applied.

5

Going Home

After 15-30 minutes of rest, you can go home. We recommend having someone accompany you and taking it easy for a few days.

Recovery

First Days (1-3 days):

  • Rest - lie down as much as possible for the first 24-48 hours
  • Cooling - ice packs 3 times daily for 15 minutes (reduces swelling and pain)
  • Scrotal support - tight underwear or athletic supporter
  • Pain relievers - common pain medications (ibuprofen, paracetamol)
  • Avoid physical exertion

First Week:

  • Gradual return to normal activities
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects (over 5 kg)
  • Work leave 3-5 days (office work 1-2 days)
  • Monitor wound healing

After 1-2 Weeks:

  • Sexual activity - possible after 7 days
  • Sports and physical activity - return after 2-3 weeks
  • Wounds are completely healed
  • Important: Use other contraception for the first 3 months!

When is a Vasectomy Effective?

A vasectomy is not effective immediately! Sperm remain in the vas deferens for another 2-3 months. Use other contraception for at least 3 months or 20 ejaculations. Then a semen analysis is needed to confirm the absence of sperm.

Important Information

Benefits of Vasectomy:

  • Nearly 100% reliability
  • Simple outpatient procedure
  • Minimal recovery
  • No effect on sexual function and libido
  • Economically advantageous (one-time cost)
  • No hormones or side effects
  • Simpler and safer than female sterilization

What Vasectomy Does NOT Affect:

  • Sexual desire (libido) - remains the same
  • Erection - no change
  • Orgasm and ejaculation - no change
  • Amount of ejaculate - almost the same (sperm make up only 1-5%)
  • Testosterone levels - no change
  • Masculinity - no effect

What You Should Know:

  • Permanent solution - vasectomy should be considered permanent
  • Reversal is possible but difficult - vasovasostomy has a 50-70% success rate
  • Does not protect against STIs - still use condoms with new partners
  • Requires a mature decision - discuss thoroughly with your partner

Possible Risks and Complications

A vasectomy is a safe procedure with a low risk of complications:

  • Hematoma, scrotal swelling (10-15%, usually mild)
  • Infection (less than 1%)
  • Chronic pain (1-2%, usually mild, rarely severe)
  • Sperm granuloma (5%, usually asymptomatic)
  • Spontaneous recanalization (failure, less than 1%)
  • Regret about the decision (5-10%)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a vasectomy painful?

No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so it is painless. You may only feel a slight pulling sensation. After the surgery, there may be mild discomfort for 2-3 days.

Can a vasectomy be reversed?

Yes, but it is a complicated microsurgical operation (vasovasostomy) with a 50-70% success rate. It is expensive and not always successful. Consider a vasectomy as a permanent solution.

Will a vasectomy affect my masculinity?

Absolutely not. A vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, libido, erection, or sexual performance. The only change is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate.

How much does it cost?

The price of a vasectomy under local anesthesia is €589, under general anesthesia €699. It is a one-time cost that is more economical than long-term contraceptive methods.
