What is Female Sterilization?

Female sterilization (tubal ligation) is a surgical procedure in which the fallopian tubes are cut or removed, permanently preventing fertilization of the egg by sperm. It is one of the most reliable contraceptive methods with over 99% effectiveness.

Sterilization DOES NOT affect your menstrual cycle, hormone levels, libido, or sexual function. Eggs are still produced, they just cannot be fertilized.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Women who have completed their planned family
  • Couples who don't want (more) children
  • Women for whom pregnancy poses a health risk
  • Women who don't want to use hormonal contraception
  • Permanent solution without need for regular doctor visits

Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation

We perform modern sterilization laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) through 2-3 small incisions (5-10 mm) in the abdominal wall. The surgeon uses a camera and specialized instruments to close or remove the fallopian tubes.

Benefits of laparoscopy:

  • Minimal scarring - only 2-3 small incisions (5-10 mm)
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Fast recovery - return to work in 3-7 days
  • Shorter hospitalization - often just 1 day
  • Lower risk of infections and complications
  • Better cosmetic results

Methods of fallopian tube closure:

  • Electrocoagulation - "burning" the tubes (most common)
  • Clips - closure with special clamps
  • Partial tube removal - most reliable

Surgery Process

1

Pre-operative Consultation

Discussion with gynecologist, examination, confirmation of decision. Signing of informed consent. Blood tests, ECG.

2

Day of Surgery

Arrival at clinic on an empty stomach (at least 6 hours). Preparation for surgery, IV line placement. Usually performed outside of menstruation.

3

Surgery

General anesthesia. Surgeon makes 2-3 small incisions, inserts camera and instruments. Fallopian tubes are closed or removed. Duration: 20-40 minutes.

4

After Surgery

Monitoring in recovery room. Mobilization on the same day. 1-day hospitalization, sometimes possible to leave the same evening.

5

Discharge

Discharge home with written report and recommendations. Follow-up in 7-10 days.

Recovery

First Days (1-3 days):

  • Light movement is encouraged - walking promotes healing
  • Painkillers for pain management (usually mild)
  • Avoid heavy physical work
  • Possible bloating (CO2 from surgery)

First Week:

  • Gradual return to normal activities
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects (over 5 kg)
  • Sick leave 3-7 days (depending on type of work)
  • Wound check, bandage removal
  • Shower allowed, bath after one week

After 2-4 Weeks:

  • Sexual activity - possible after 2 weeks
  • Sports and physical activity - return after 2-3 weeks
  • Wounds are fully healed
  • Menstruation may be slightly delayed

When is sterilization effective?

Sterilization is effective immediately. After the surgery, you cannot become pregnant. No waiting period or other contraception is needed (unlike vasectomy in men).

Important Information

Benefits of sterilization:

  • Nearly 100% reliability (99.5%)
  • Permanent solution - no further costs
  • No hormones or side effects
  • No impact on menstruation and hormones
  • Immediate effectiveness
  • Economically advantageous (one-time cost)
  • No need to think about contraception

What sterilization doesn't affect:

  • Menstrual cycle - remains the same
  • Hormone levels - no change
  • Sexual desire (libido) - remains the same
  • Sexual function - no impact
  • Ovaries continue to produce hormones
  • Menopause arrives at the normal age

What you should know:

  • Permanent solution - sterilization should be considered permanent
  • Reversal is difficult - reconstructive surgery is complex, expensive, and has only 50-80% success rate
  • Doesn't protect against STIs - still use condoms with new partners
  • Requires mature decision - discuss thoroughly with your partner
  • Legal requirements - in Slovakia possible from age 18, recommended with children or over 35

Possible Risks and Complications

Sterilization is a safe procedure with low complication risk:

  • Wound infection (less than 1%)
  • Bleeding (rare)
  • Internal organ injury (very rare, less than 0.1%)
  • Method failure - spontaneous reconnection (0.5%)
  • Ectopic pregnancy in case of failure (rare)
  • Regret of decision (5-20%, depends on age and circumstances)

Frequently Asked Questions

Will sterilization affect my menstruation?

No. Your menstrual cycle remains the same. Ovaries continue to produce hormones and eggs, they just cannot reach the uterus.

Can sterilization be reversed?

Yes, but it's a complex microsurgical procedure with 50-80% success rate. It's expensive and not always successful. Consider sterilization as a permanent solution.

Will I go through menopause earlier?

No. Sterilization doesn't affect the age of menopause onset. Ovaries function normally and produce hormones until natural menopause.

What's better - female sterilization or vasectomy?

Vasectomy is simpler, cheaper, and safer (outpatient procedure under local anesthesia). Female sterilization is suitable if the man doesn't want vasectomy or for gynecological reasons.
